The 10 Best Coffee and Double/Imperial Coffee Stouts of 2022
Whether you get your buzz in the morning (with coffee) or your buzz at night (with beer), there's no denying that one of craft brewers' brilliant moves has been putting the two together.
Coffee stouts are the perfect way to combine the roastiness of a cup of Joe with the velvety, chocolatey, booziness of a stout.
Since Saturday, Oct, 1, 2022, is National Coffee Day, we thought we'd celebrate by putting our two favorite things together—coffee and stouts.
Much like coffee can be nuanced through a pour-over, a French press, or a Chemex, stouts are often finessed by brewers through barrel-aging. The extra time spent in barrels gives double/imperial coffee stouts an added layer of depth and complexity, often picking up characteristics of the barrels or unused spirits.
And as the craft coffee industry itself has grown, so has the variety of beans featured by breweries in their coffee stouts. Often, famed local roasters are highlighted, such as Stumptown in Portland, OR; Dark Matter in Chicago, IL; Olympia Coffee Company in Olympia, WA, and so many more.
The possibilities are endless, making us jump up and down more than a double shot of espresso at three in the afternoon.
